Research Interests / Specializations:

Emerging contaminant removal, Nature-based solutions for water treatment, Green infrastructure

Personal Background:

Hafiz M. Abd-ur-Rehman is an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow who joined the RESTORE Research Group at Western University in 2026, working under the supervision of Dr. Clare Robinson. His research focuses on developing and optimising nature-based solutions to improve urban water quality, with particular emphasis on the removal of emerging contaminants.

He received his PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia. His PhD research explored the use of green walls (vertical gardens) for greywater treatment, focusing on the removal of xenobiotic organic compounds (XOCs), a class of organic micropollutants originating from anthropogenic sources.

His interdisciplinary research spans water–energy sustainability, with contributions to nature-based water treatment systems, decentralized solar water purification, and techno-economic evaluation of energy projects. Through this work, Dr. Abd-ur-Rehman has authored/co-authored 10+ publications in high impact Q1 journals, presented his research at international conferences, and holds three US patents (granted).
